Charlotte Matthaei

Charlotte is able to draw on her wealth of business experience from a variety of organisations. She has worked closely with business leaders to shape and develop organisations and their people.

Charlotte’s HR career has encompassed all aspects of HR and organisational development.  She has extensive senior management experience in employee relations, leadership development and change management, including mergers, acquisitions, divestments and restructurings.

After an initial period in the public sector, she enjoyed the excitement and challenge of setting up Powergen as part of the electricity industry privatisation. Here, she helped drive and sustain the rapid changes in culture that were required in the new commercial world. 

Charlotte’s last corporate role was as HR Director for the international energy business,  Powergen International. This had operations and development activities in India, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Australia, Portugal, Hungary and Germany, as well as the UK. She has direct experience of the cultural challenges and benefits of working with both expats and local staff. Coaching formed a natural and regular part of her role as a senior HR leader. For the last few years, Charlotte has been working as a coach and mentor, as well as an independent consultant.

Her clients have been leaders, aspiring leaders, independent professionals and individuals. They have been from large and small organisations, private and public, based primarily in the UK or SE Asia. Sectors include energy, infrastructure, IT, manufacturing and professional services.

Charlotte’s style

Often described as having a calm style, Charlotte brings warmth and empathy to her work, whilst remaining totally objective and non-judgmental.

She works well with people of different culture and backgrounds, valuing and respecting their differences. The strong relationships she has built with those she has worked with outside the UK are evidence of her cross-cultural sensitivity and understanding.

Where decisions or choices have to be made, Charlotte provides an analytical and objective sounding board, challenging and questioning in a supportive way – a true critical friend.

Her integrity is well recognised, providing a safe and confidential space for clients to explore sensitive or difficult issues.

Charlotte’s Qualifications

Charlotte is a Certified NLP Coach and Master Practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). She trained initially with ITS (International Training Seminars) in London and has since developed her skills with further training in areas such as Energetic NLP, Clean Language and Group Mastery as well as coaching masterclasses and conferences.

She is currently a member of the Association for Coaching (AC) and abides by their Ethical and Professional Standards. Previously, she has also been a member of the International Coach Federation (ICF), where she gained the Professional Certified Coach (PCC) accreditation.

As an HR professional, Charlotte has also been a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) for more than twenty years.

On the academic side, she has an MA in Classics from Cambridge University, which first got her interested in the power and impact of language.

Other interests

Charlotte loves travelling, learning about different cultures and enjoying different foods. She feels inspired and energised by nature and the beauty of the world around her – and makes time to smell the roses each day. She also enjoys walking with friends, particularly when there are spectacular views.

In recent years, she has been a Trustee, and company secretary, of a couple of local charities, as well as a Business Mentor for the Prince’s Trust. Charlotte also acts as Quality Assessor for CGS Career Guidance Services Ltd.
